Nezuzot

Gabriel Saloman is a Santa Cruz, California based musician and artist. Saloman has been performing experimental, conceptual and freely improvised music for two decades. He is well known for his work with Pete Swanson in Yellow Swans, a Portland based noise group that released over 50 recordings and toured internationally over the course of its nine-year existence. He currently performs solo under his own name and has released records with Miasmah (GR), Shelter Press (FR), Infinite Greyscale (GR) and Beacon Sound (US). He has collaborated with numerous artists including Peter Broderick, Common Eider King Eider, C. Diab, Machinefabriek, and as a member of Chambers with Michael Red. Much of his recent music has been composed for contemporary dance, including collaborations with choreographers such as The Contingency Plan, Daisy Karen Thompson, Lisa Gelly Martin, Rob Kitsos, Company 605 and Vanessa Goodman. He has been invited to perform at numerous festivals and arts institutions around the world, including most recently at the Berkeley Art Museum (USA); The Frye Museum of Art (USA); Indexical (USA); Kunstewerk Institute of Contemporary Art (GR); Muziekenbouw (NL); and The Western Front (CAN).

Performing live Saloman has consistently explored the outer limits of electric guitar drone, testing the emotive and material possibilities of the instrument alongside field recordings, magnetic tape and sampled piano and percussion. On record his compositions approach a neo-classical ambience, and stem from investigations into temporal abstractions, conceptual sound art and gestural noise. Within his work is a parallel concern with sound as both liberating practice and praxis. In particular he is interested in sound’s relation to the body and its capacity to move collective bodies in space.

Saloman received an MFA at Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts. He is currently pursuing a PhD in the History of Consciousness program at the University of Santa Cruz.

K.C.M. Walker: I practice magic and witchcraft in an effort to better understand the connections that ritual and ceremony have to both musical and non-musical performance practice, be they traditional or self-invented. I am fascinated by obscure instruments, archaic instruments, and things that are not instruments. I am from Charleston, South Carolina, but I currently live in Santa Cruz, California where I study music composition with David Dunn and Larry Polansky at The University of California. Hail Satan.

Dolphin Midwives

Sage Elaine Fisher is an American composer, performer and sound artist. She is best known for her performance project, Dolphin Midwives, which abstracts harp, voice and percussion using electronics, extended techniques and ritual processes. She explores themes of empathy, sustainability, vulnerability and transformation through social experiment, meditation, psychoacoustics and magic.

Her debut record, Orchid Milk, was self-released on limited edition tape in May 2016. Her installation, Naturaphones, was shown in 2017 at The Bison Building, as a culmination of a six month residency for PNCA+OCAC, and featured four large-scale acoustic sculptures, ambient performance, and several sculptural prototypes. She founded and directed Dröna Choir to perform her new choral work, invisibility ritual; performed on the new moon in total darkness, to explore the vast space between silence and sound. Her sound art performance/installation, Break: preparations for the apocalypse, was shown at Variform Gallery in Dec 2018. Liminal Garden, Dolphin Midwives’ debut studio album, was released internationally on Jan 18, 2019 by Beacon Sound/Sounds et al to critical acclaim, earning the artist mentions in The New York Times, SPIN, and The Guardian, among other publications. In June 2019 she joined the ranks as one of Portland’s “Best New Bands” in the Willamette Week.

Crystal Quartez

C R Y S T A L C O R T E Z is a musician and creative coder based in Portland, Oregon. Her sonic work is focused around the use of field recordings, sounds produced and electronically processed live from objects, and multi-channel sound spatialization. Her practice has recently involved the development of interactive sculptural interfaces and wearable technology that use movement and other corporeal methods to drive audio and visuals. Crystal blends sound, tech and performance art to produce ceremonial happenings. Her work has been shown at PNCA, PICA, Navel (LA) and more.
