FAULTS is the improvising trio of Jorge Bachmann, Kevin Corcoran and Jaroba. The trio works with electronics, percussion and bass clarinet sometimes including the use of field recordings and graphic or text scores to guide their live performances. 

Faults practice involves site specificity where performances and recordings are made in disused bunkers on a decommissioned naval base, in a columbarium, in a residential garden, in a furniture store, at a rocky shoreline of the Pacific coast, and beneath freeway overpasses. Interaction with the incidental sounds in these environments informs the trio’s approach to timbre, tonality, space, and extended technique on their instruments when playing in more typical venues and studios as well. Each member works with acoustic instruments, electronics, and field recordings, and the intersection of these approaches leads to the particular sound of this trio.

Faults sound oscillates between quiet and loud, sparse and dense, weaving together textural noise, drone, floating melodic lines, and bristling percussive elements. The result is a rich and readily shifting electroacoustic dynamic.

For this performance at Indexical, FAULTS will be extended to a quartet through collaboration with Gabby Wen, an Oakland based musician working with electronics, field recordings, and guqin. This quartet recorded a site-specific piece in the Joshua Tree desert in 2022 and will be making their first live appearance in this formation at Indexical. The quartet will be accompanied by live generative visuals from Oakland based Andrej Hronco.

mb is the solo project of multimedia artist Michael Bailey. Active since 2004, the California native has performed in DIY spaces, art galleries, dive bars and theaters up and down the West and East Coast. He is also a curator of experimental performances, running a nomadic music series dubbed Impulse Response Tests, showcasing a wide range of artists such as Bill Nace, Tetuzi Akiyama, John Krausbauer, Oracle Plus and the Charlambides.

Through the use of transducers applied to acoustic bodies (upright bass, acoustic guitar and resonant found objects), Bailey searches for psychoacoustic occurrences, exciting the acoustic characteristics by applying electrical signals and and low frequency vibrations directly to the bodies and/or strings in order to conjure rhythmic and harmonic elements.
